Finding Your Perfect Style and Stylist

These days, choosing a hairstyle is like choosing a coffin. You simply dread picking out something that is so.... FINAL. So many thoughts run through your head as you are headed to your hair appointment; 'What if they cut it too short?' 'I don't want my face to look fat.' 'Maybe I should just get a trim instead.'

The real key to getting that perfect cut, color, and style that you want is to do some research. The first thing you should do is locate all the salons in your area. Then, you will need to go to these salons and meet the stylists. Tell them you are looking for a stylist and ask them if they have a portfolio you can look at or if they can schedule you for a consultation. While you are talking to them, pay attention to their body language, tone and facial expressions. You will want someone who appears to be energetic, happy, and who sounds eager to earn your business.

Once you have 'interviewed' all of the potential stylists, sit down and decide who is best suited to your aesthetic. DO NOT rely on friends and/or family for referrals! While their stylist might be great for them, that same stylist might not necessarily be the best fit for you.

Now that you have made your decision, schedule an appointment and go on about your regularly scheduled life.

It is always good to have an idea of what kind of style you would like. Do you want something current? Classic? Edgy? Buying a hairstyle magazine will help you decide what kind of hairstyle(s) you like. You can find them at nearly any drugstore, Target, Walmart, etc... Take it with you so your stylist can have an idea of what you are looking for.

All cosmetologists have formal education and are required to take and pass licensing exams in their state. This means they KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. Your best bet is to let her/him direct you in a direction and basically give them creative freedom to do what they do best. Of course you should give them some limits as to length and color but ultimately, they are not going to intentionally do anything that will result in tears (unless they are tears of joy from your miraculous hair makeover).
